7 US states now have adopted or introduced EU style laws. California, Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Maryland. The norm setting of EU legislation is an intended consequence of EU data geopolitics, imo, and underscores the role of GDPR as a QA instrument. zylstra.org/blog/2019/03/7-us-

ffs, This is so mindboggling: a UK ID system proposed to assist in how difficult residency will be after Brexit . It would have been the solution to all the issues the UK said they had with FoM before Brexit. They could have, but never bothered. Sigh theguardian.com/politics/2019/

This article is a good description of the Freedom of Information ( ) situation in the Balkans. Due to my work in the region, I recognise lots of what is described here. My work in the region, such as in Serbia, has let me encounter.... zylstra.org/blog/2019/03/6194/

Had a quick look at Mastodon stats globally. 80% of all users are on less than 1% of instances. This is not federation but centralisation by another name. Unless you actively build a long tail (20% largest instances hold less than 50% of users) there's no sustainable decentralisation. It's up to you to join small or personal instances, and motivate others to do so too.

World Bank data measuring gender inequality in the law:

wbl.worldbank.org/# (--> "Get the data")

Canada, Denmark, Latvia and Spain at the top with a score of 97.5.

NL in 27th place (score 89.38), surpassed by 23 other European countries, including less than high-income countries, such as Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania.

In NL: no legislation on domestic violence, no paid parental/paternity leave, no pension credit for childcare periods (as of 2018).

Blockchain: decentralisation centralised on my coin.

Hint: the core of decentralisation isn’t about having a billion copies of the same database. It’s about a billion people each having their own, unique database.

PS. In a truly decentralised system, no one makes a billion dollars. *watches all the right libertarians make for the door*

PPS. A venture capitalist would never invest in a truly decentralised system. Why? See PS, above.

Privacy is not a science, it is a human right

ar.al/2019/02/14/privacy-is-no

My response to a dangerous turd of an article by Bart van der Sloot (co-founder of Amsterdam Privacy Week – sponsored by Palantir and Google – and docent teaching “Privacy and Big Data” at Tilburg University)

Mr. Sloot attempts to reframe privacy as a “science” and shame those who work to protect it for having a “pro-privacy agenda” & not being “neutral”. He also calls for “new rules” to disallow such biased behaviour.

De eerste Nederlandse in Utrecht komt er aan. @frank en ik zetten in op 18 en 19 mei. We zoeken nog een locatie, en zodra we die hebben volgt de aankondiging en uitnodiging.

This morning @frank and I set a date for the first Dutch in Utrecht. Now need to find a space, and announce it to get participants.
